My First Gig of 2016: Rachel Platten

My goal – or more so, my Mum’s suggestion – for 2016 was to spend less money on concerts and travelling around England so I could save absolutely everything for when I go to America in the summer.

But I couldn’t help but splurge a little when one of my favourite, relatively new artists, Rachel Platten announced a date in the UK.  Even if it did mean I’d get home the next day at 3am.

So, on Tuesday 19th January, I hopped on a train to London, and was reunited with my absolute favourite people as we queued outside the venue.  I was even surprised by a few people who had deliberately hidden the fact they were showing up.  I also saw my all time favourite Swede again (shout out to Elin), and even made some new friends from Norway who had come over just for the concert!

And the hours we spent queuing kinda turned into a photoshoot.  Polaroids.  Selfies.  Group photos.  The lot.

The venue itself was absolutely tiny, I couldn’t believe it.  And was super excited when we ended up right on the front row.  FRONT ROW.  Though I’m pretty sure that wherever you stood you would have been guaranteed a great view anyway.

And as for Rachel Platten; I was completely blown away by every single one of her performances.  She had a short, half an hour set, but she made every minute magical.  There was a moment where she came up to me and sang right into my camera, she cupped other people’s faces whilst singing, and right at the end, she grabbed my hand before she left the stage.  11/10 for interacting with the audience.

  • Beating Me Up
  • Lone Ranger
  • Congratulations
  • Better Place
  • Astronaut
  • Speechless
  • Stand By You
  • Fight Song (the whole audience sang the chorus back to her and it was one of the most surreal moments I have ever witnessed)

I can’t decide who was more surprised by the show; us, when we realised Rachel was an actual real-life angel, or her, when we sang the words back to every single one of her songs.

Definitely an artist I would see live again, and I would 100% recommend her to anyone who hasn’t listened to her before (I’ll link her YouTube channel below).
